So given this situation the people responsible took the bold step of admitting something was wrong and tried to do something about it. (While technically this is obviously the right thing to do it opens them up to a range of criticism from those that prefer a political approach to office life.)
They concluded that the necessary expertise to sort the problems out didn't exist within the company and set out to recruit it.
The job I was offered was to educate the development group in "OO development". My first task was to be technical leadership on a project to rework the "standard system" and to find better ways to use the standard system to deliver bespoke solutions - to make it a success.
