Notes:

About 4/5 years ago we noticed a problem. We weren’t able to deliver the solutions our customers required in a suitable time frame and the profitability of projects was poor. We were also requiring a more diverse set of skills to provide the more technically complex solutions.

It wasn’t all bad. When we did eventually complete solutions our customers were highly satisfied and support revenues were good.

To fix these symptoms we moved to a flexible team structure in which resources are now pooled and pulled together to form pools for the duration of a project. This required a substantial re-organisation of the company as a whole.

The larger and more complex a project was, the bigger the project team. This was true also of customer project teams.

The new flexible team structure had brought with it its own problems and was failing to address the initial problems. A further restructuring took place to attempt to address the problems.

In addition to which a decision was made to adopt new technologies, with a view to reducing development timescales and cost.
