The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.

I've struggled with this – I guess it relates to a different environment than any I've encountered. I find that the best architectures, requirements and designs evolve as knowledge of the problem and solution domains increases.
I can see the relationship to teams as this process is faster and more effective when ideas can be bounced around a team with complementary skills.
This more or less fits with the idea of them emerging.
However, I don't see how this relates to the self-organisation (or otherwise) of teams.
Mark Radford suggests that this relates to allowing the team to determine its own plan, rather than having one imposed from outside.
